About Death Anniversary of Jyoti Basu

The 17th of January marks the death anniversary of Jyoti Basu, who was a prominent political leader of the country form the Communist Party of India, from the state of West Bengal.

He passed away in the year 2010 and thus, this year 2017 marks his 7th death anniversary.

He had been the chief minister of the state of West Bengal five times, from 1977 to 2000, and this long tenure makes him hold the record of the longest-serving chief minister in the country ever.

He was born on the 8th of July in the year 1914 in an affluent Bengali family to a doctor father and a homemaker mother. After successfully completing his under graduation degree in English honors from the popular Presidency College of Calcutta, he went to England to study law, and it was during this time that he got heavily influenced by the Communist Party of Great Britain and developed an instant interest in politics.

After his return to India, he actively became a member of the Communist Party, much to his father’s dislike. He was married to Basanti Devi, who passed away quite young after only two years of her marriage.

After his successful service of a political career, in the year 2010 early January, he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia and was immediately admitted to the hospital, where he remained for the next 17 days till his death on the 17th of January due to multiple organ failure.
