Located in the south Indian state of Karnataka, Udupi is a popular pilgrim town that also serves as the headquarters of the Udupi District in the Karnataka state. Interestingly, it also lends its name to the very popular and widely appreciated Udupi cuisine.

Coming to the religious forefront, Udupi is famous for its Krishna Temple, devoted to, as the name suggests, Lord Krishna, one of Hinduism’s most popular and worshipped deity.

The temple premises consist of a matha, which serves as an ashram, and around it resides many other temples, the most famous among which is the 1000 years old Udupi Anantheshwara Temple.

The Krishna Temple was built in an era as early as the 13th century by popular Vaishnavite Saint Shri Madhavacharya. Being a pivotal pilgrim town, Udupi is famous for many titles, such as the Lord Parasurama Kshetra, Rajata Peetha, and Shivalli.

While Krishna Janmashthami happens to be the main festival here, other Hindu festivals such as Sankranti, Diwali, Navrathri, Dussehra, etc, to are celebrated in great spirits here.

Apart from the Krishna Temple, the other prominent shrines here are Ambalapady Mahakali Temple, Moodabidri Jain Temples, Mookambika Temple, etc, to name a few.
