This is a very important day and people of north India are the majority who observe it.
The name Gorakhnath literally means an individual who has ace control over all his senses and along with that has also mastered the control over human nature’s most dangerous and negative five characteristics.
The city of Gorakhpur, located in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has its name derived from Guru Gorakhnath, and they also exist a popular temple named Gorakhnath Temple.
According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that long ago in the 11th century BC, Guru Gorakhnath had himself visited this place and sat there for long hours to perform puja.
He was the most important teacher of Nath Sampradaya and had written a list of books, preaching his ideologies, which fundamentally forms the base of this whole tradition.
It is believed that he was taught by Matsyendranath, who was an avid follower of Lord Shiva, and Lord Shiva in the form of Lord Adinath had taught all the secrets of the supreme truth to Matsyendranath.
Ideally, the true followers of Guru Gorakhnath don’t celebrate his birth anniversary and observe no such day as Guru Gorakhnath Jayanti, since they believe Guru Gorakhnath was no ordinary human and had existed way before the creation of mankind and life on the planet.
The origins of meditation, as well as yoga too, are accredited to Guru Gorakhnath, who always practiced the same and also taught it to his disciples.
