What happened
SEBI is the government body that regulates the stock market and mutual funds in India. Its chairman, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, led the launch on 5 October. The event marked the start of World Investor Week 2026, which India is observing from 5 to 11 October. It is the 10th edition of this yearly week, run under a global group of market regulators called IOSCO.
The theme for the week, and the name of the new campaign, is Samajh Se Investing Simple. In plain words, it means investing becomes simple when you understand what you are doing. SEBI said the campaign wants people to understand products and their risks, check that an investment platform is genuine before paying, and make careful decisions.
Mr Pandey warned people against tips from unknown sources. “Beware of investment frauds, use regulated products, channels and entities, not anonymous tips or finfluencers or exaggerated claims on returns,” he said, as reported by PTI. Finfluencers are social media personalities who give money and stock tips. He also said, “Do not invest because someone told you to. Do not invest because everyone else is investing. Invest, because you understand.”
Who is affected
The campaign is meant for every saver and investor, including people who have never put money in shares or mutual funds. College students are a special focus. Rural families are another, because SEBI plans to work with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and state governments to take its message to villages.
Stock brokers are directly affected by a SEBI circular dated 1 October 2026. Anyone who uses a broker’s website or trading app will start seeing SEBI’s awareness messages there.
Key details and numbers
Rules for brokers
- From 5 to 31 October 2026, all brokers must show SEBI’s investor awareness messages on their websites, along with the risk disclosures they already show.
- From 1 November 2026, the messages must appear on the landing page, or first page, of broker websites.
- On trading apps, showing the messages is voluntary in October.
- From 1 November 2026, apps must show the awareness messages and the risk disclosures on alternate days, on the app’s landing page.
- Stock exchanges and depositories must also show the messages on their own websites. SEBI may change the messages from time to time.
What SEBI’s survey found
Mr Pandey shared findings from a large SEBI survey. About 63 per cent of households knew of at least one stock market product, but only about 9.5 per cent actually invested. Only 36 per cent of investors had high or moderate knowledge of the market. Participation was 15 per cent in cities and 6 per cent in villages. Fewer than one per cent of people had attended an investor awareness programme, though 91 per cent of those who did found it useful. Only 6 per cent knew about SEBI’s complaint system, yet 88 per cent of those who used it were satisfied.
Other steps announced
- An official SEBI WhatsApp channel, reached through the number 1800 22 7575. SEBI says it will carry a verified blue tick so people can spot the real account.
- A programme called MUST, short for Mentoring of University/College Students by Trainers. Teachers, staff and senior students will be trained and certified as Partner Trainers who teach basic money skills and fraud safety on campus.
- A tie up with the Association of Indian Universities to spread the programme to more colleges.
- Messages in English, Hindi and 11 regional languages, on TV, radio, print, cinema, social media, OTT platforms and WhatsApp, according to PTI.
- A new SEBI local office in Chandigarh, opened at the same event.
What happens next
World Investor Week events will run until 11 October. The website rule for brokers is already in force. The bigger change comes on 1 November, when the messages move to the first page of broker websites and become compulsory on trading apps.
PTI reported that Mr Pandey also spoke of a National Securities Market Awareness Curriculum, backed by a free SEBI Investor Awareness Test, to give a common base for investor education.
Background
Project Jagrook was launched earlier by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as a nationwide financial literacy drive. SEBI runs it with the National Institute of Securities Markets, the stock exchanges BSE, NSE and MCX, the depositories CDSL and NSDL, and the Association of Mutual Funds in India.
More Indians are now putting savings into the market. Mr Pandey said mutual fund assets have grown from Rs 12 lakh crore in 2015 to 16 to around Rs 87 lakh crore now. SEBI’s survey shows that many people still invest without fully understanding what they buy, and that is the gap the campaign hopes to close.
What it means for you
Before you invest, ask yourself what the money is for. Mr Pandey put it this way: “Instead of asking, ‘Which product gives the highest return?’, first ask, ‘What am I investing for?'” As reported by The Indian Express, he also listed simple habits. Invest only in products you understand. Start early and stay invested. Spread your money across different options. Do not assume a fixed return means there is no risk.
