P.V. Sindhu – Olympics Medal Winner

About P.V. Sindhu

Born on July 5, 1995, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, commonly known as P.V. Sindhu hails from Hyderabad, and currently holds the record of being the first Indian woman who won a silver medal in the Summer Olympics, held in 2016.

She first rose to limelight in the year 2012 when she made it to the Top 20 list of BWF World Ranking in the month of September.

In the next year that was 2013, she set another record for herself when she bagged the silver medal at the Badminton World Champions, becoming the first Indian ever to win the honor in Women’s Singles Badminton.

There was no looking booking for Sindhu after that as she was honored with the Padma Shri Award, which is considered to be the fourth highest civilian award in India, in the year 2015. In this too she made a record since she was the youngest Indian civilian to receive this honor.

She was born to former volleyball players P.V. Ramanna and P. Vijaya in a Telugu family. Despite her parents being from the field of volleyball, Sindhu chose badminton as her specialization, citing Pullela Gopichand as her inspiration, who was the All England Open Badminton Champion of 2001.

She started getting her training in the sport from the tender age of eight, and she got the guidance from Mehboob Ali at the badminton courts of Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad, located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. She was also a part of India’s national team in the 2010 Uber Cup in Badminton.

Even Sindhu’s first inspiration, Pullela Gopichand, commended the former’s strength in the sport, saying Sindhu is someone who has a never-die spirit and her attitude towards the game makes her an exceptional sportsperson in the field.

Her win in the 2016 Rio Olympics took the nation by storm, making her the most Googled person in that span in no time, and the whole of prominent personalities of the country from the field of business to entertainment, politics, etc, expressed their unbridled joy over Sindhu’s achievement through their social media handles.
