Death Anniversary of Indian Revolutionary Sukhdev: 23rd March

About Sukhdev

The date of 23^rd March marks the death anniversary of popular young Indian revolutionary, Sukhdev, alongside his partners, fellow young Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Raj guru.

Born on the 15th of May in the year 1907 in Ludhiana, in the Indian state of Punjab,SukhdevThapar, or Sukhdev, as he was simply and commonly known, was a significant revolutionary in the Indian freedom movement and was also a prominent member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association—the restructured version of the Hindustan Republican Association.

His father had passed away at an early stage of his life and so he was brought up by his uncle, LalaAchintram.

He played a vital role in organizing a number of revolutionary activities and cells in the northern state of Punjab, along with many other nearby states.

He set up the foundation stone and established the Naujawan Bharat Sabha, a community for the youth that focused on guiding and training the youngsters and preparing them for freedom struggles, organizing campaigns, and in a nutshell, striving for independence.

He was also a teacher at the National College of Lahore, in Pakistan and always voiced against the acts of communalism.

He was a trusted accomplice of famous freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh and played a key role in the Lahore Conspiracy Case of 1928, wherein J.P. Saunders, the Deputy Superintendent of Police was assassinated as a reply to the violent death of prominent leader LalaLajpatRai after his protest against the Simon Commission. He along with Singh and Rajuguru were arrested for the conspiracy and convicted, with a death sentence.

He was hanged on the 23rd of March in the year 1931 along with his partners in the conspiracy, Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Shaheed ShivaramRajguru, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). He was only 24 years old when he was hanged. The bodies of the three men were cremated in the banks of River Satluj, in a clandestine fashion.
