The date of March 23 marks the tragic deaths by the execution of young and popular Indian revolutionary Shaheed Bhagat Singh, along with his contemporaries and partners, Sukhdev and Shivaram Rajguru

Born on the 27^th of September in the year 1907, Bhagat Singh was one of the most powerful and headstrong Indian revolutionaries, who is still remembered for his courageous acts, strong will and determination to fight against the British Raj and fight for the nation’s freedom.

In history, his role in the Indian Independence Movement garnered nationwide acclaim, giving him the name “Shaheed Bhagat Singh,” wherein, “Shaheed” means “martyr.” Hailing from a Sikh family which had actively participated in a number of revolutionary activities, Singh developed a keen interest in this field and began studying European revolutionary movements and became fond of ideologies of Marxism as well as Anarchism.

He soon became a part of the Hindustan Republican Association—which later came to be known as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, after it was restructured in the year 1928.

After Lala Lajpat Rai died a violent death resulting from injuries caused by police beatings after he non-violently protested against the Simon Commission, the brutality of Rai’s death vexed Bhagat Singh as well as a number of his accomplices and supporters, who wanted to avenge Rai’s merciless death. Singh conspired with fellow revolutionaries and freedom fighters Sukhdev, ShivaramRajguru as well as Chandrashekhar Azad, to bomb and kill the chief of police Scott, but things took a different turn when in a fit of mistaken identity, they accidentally ended up killing Assistant Superintendent of Police J. Saunders.

The men were tried for the murder and were given the death sentences. During his stay at the jail, Singh garnered nationwide support for his 117 days fast, demanding the government to have equality in the treatment of European as well as Indian prisoners. Many protests and oppositions against the death sentence of Singh took place but nothing could revoke the court’s decision.

On March 23^rd in the year 1931, at the age of just 23, Singh along with his accomplices Sukhdev and Shivaram Rajguru were hanged till death. Singh left a mark in history, something so strong that it inspired the future youth to voice against the wrong and strive for freedom with full courage and determination.
