Born on the 28th of May in the year 1883, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known by the name Veer Savarkar was a prominent pro- independence activist, who was also a successful poet, writer, politician as well as playwright
He strongly opposed the caste system in Hinduism, and his philosophies mainly revolved around five essential elements, which were: Humanism and Universalism, Utilitarianism, Rationalism and Positivism, Pragmatism, as well as Realism. Although Savarkar preached about bringing in unity in the nation, he was widely criticized by many people who believed that the leader was biased towards Hindu as a religion as his philosophies too promoted the concept of “Hindutva,” and thus, neglected other religions.
He was the founding member of many nationalist associations, including the Free India Society, as well as the Abhinav Bharat Society, and had also penned down a number of books, including the Indian War of Independence, which was based on the 1857 Indian Rebellion. This book was banned by the British government, and Savarkar’s association with groups like the India House, led to his imprisonment, though he was eventually released.
He passed away on the 26th of February, 1966.
