Shimla serves as the prime hub for the cultural, commercial, as well as educational sectors of the state. During the British rule in India, Shimla served as the summer capital of the country.
During the 18th century, the majority of Shimla’s areas were covered with dense forests, and its soothingly cold climate and peaceful ambiance are what drew the British government to make it a perfect summer capital of India.
The term “Shimla” was coined after a popular Hindu goddess—Shyamala Devi, who was believed to be an incarnation of popular Hindu deity, Goddess Kaali.
