About Shankaracharya Jayanti

Shankaracharya Jayanti, also known as Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti is celebrated in India on the 30th of April every year. The day is the birth anniversary of popular guru and Indian philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, and ideally as per traditions and the Hindu calendar, his birthday is falls in the Vaishakha month, during Shukla Paksha on the panchami tithi, and that as per the Gregorian calendar falls somewhere between the months of April and May.

According to historians, Adi Shankaracharya was born long ago in 788 C.E. in Kalady, which is situated in the south Indian state of Kerala—also known as God’s own country as on the present day.

It is believed that nobody got to know what happened to Guru Shankaracharya, as he is believed to have disappeared in the era of 820 C.E. at the age of just 32 years.

Throughout his life span known to humankind, Adi Shankaracharya contributed immensely to the growth of the Hindu culture, wherein at the time when Hindu culture was facing a downfall, it was him who integrated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta, and led to its revival singlehandedly when everything about the Hindu culture was on a massive decline.

It was then with the joint efforts of three people, namely, Guru Adi Shankaracharya, Madhava, and Ramanuja, that Hindu culture was successfully revived as they became prominent teachers, spreading the philosophy of Hinduism at wider areas, making the once declining Hindu culture and its essence reappear once again, and their contribution towards Hinduism as a religion is still remembered as on today.

Adi Shankaracharya was known fundamentally for his three prime forms of teaching, which were teaching Bhakti through Bhajagovindam (he used to sing it), Gnana (knowledge) through Bhashyam (he used to write it), and finally, Vairagya, which he used to teach through Atma Shaktam.
