About Pori Festival

The Pori Festival is an annual festival in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh in India. It is celebrated in the Lahaul Valley on a grand scale and the celebration is remarkable on so many levels. This year, the festival will be celebrated on the 13th of July.

The festival is observed in the traditional way of Himachal Pradesh and the main spot for the same is the popular Trilokinath Temple located here. On the day that the Pori Festival takes place, Lord Trilokinath inside the temple is bathed with yogurt and milk by priests as well as the devotees who come from local as well as neighboring states to offer their prayers to the lord during this festival.

After this activity, at around 10 o’ clock in the morning, a huge procession begins in and around the temple, wherein a crowd full of people alongside drummers and devotees blowing conchshells and bugles enter the place, making it a complete hustling bustling affair altogether.

During the procession itself, a beautiful horse is made to walk around the temple, wherein it is believed that the lord himself sits on the back of this horse and it is for this very reason that right after the ritual is over, the horse is drenched in a plethora of sweets.

Right after this ritual as well as the procession winds up, the entire crowd along with this horse goes to the local ruler’s palace, where the horse is given a grand welcome from the royalty.

Soon after this, the local ruler rides the same horse and goes to visit the nearby fair ground, which is full of festive mood and there are many small shops set up on the occasion of the Pori Festival itself.

Throughout the festival, a butter lamp is lit constantly in the Trilokinath Temple, and as more and more devotees visit the temple to offer their prayers, they keep adding more butter to this lamp and accept the Prasad.
