About Pithapuram
Also spelled as Peetha Puram, Pithapuram is a popular Hindu pilgrim place on the Eastern Godavari district in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The place was previously known by many other names, such as Pithikapuram, Dakshina Kasi, and Pistapura.
The place is widely renowned for its ancient Hindu temples, dedicated to a list of popular Hindu deities.
Coming to these holy shrines, the primary and most famous Hindu temple here is the main Pithapuram Temple, also known by the name of Kukkuteshwara Swamy Temple, devoted to Lord Kukkuteshwara Swamy—that is an incarnation of popular Hindu deity Lord Shiva.
Raja Rajeswari is the name of the Kukkuteshwara Swamy consort. The main festivals celebrated in great spirits here include the Mahashivratri, the Kaarthika Masam, and the Sarannavaratri.
Inside the Kukkuteshwara Temple lies a popular Shakti Peetham, known as the Puruhutika Devi Temple, whereas per the logic of the Shakti Peethams, Goddess Sati’s left hand fell during Lord Shiva’s tandava with his wife’s dead body.
