About Perini Shiva Thandavam Dance

Perini Thandavam or Perini Shivatandavam is an ancient dance form from of the state Telangana. This dance form was originated and prospered in Telangana during the Kakatiya dynasty.

It is also nicknamed as ‘Dance of Warriors’. This dance form comes from the Telangana region of India and, is approximately 800 years old.

It was performed by warriors (before leaving to the battlefield) in front of the idol of Lord Shiva. This dance form was originally meant to act as a stimulus for the warriors before they marched onto the battlefield.

It was only for mean that performed this dance form. The dance was performed to derive inspiration from their muse, Lord Shiva.

This enchanting dance form was almost forgotten until the early 1970s after the decline of the dynasty. The Perini Shivatandavam was showcased at the first world Telugu Mahasabha by three disciples of Nataraja Ramakrishna.

You can also find the Perini dance form in the intricate sculptures in the  13th century Ramappa Temple located near Warangal and also in notable and reputed dance treatise.

In a bid to continue this revival and preservation of the dance form, SRR Government Arts and Science College in Karimnagar has set up a training program for students interested in learning the Perini Shiva Thandavam.

People of Telangana state have a lot of faith and respect for this dance form and they are trying their best to keep this dance form alive. They have also different occasions when this dance form is practiced and people enjoy seeing men perfuming this form of dance.

This dance form is also taught in various places so that the upcoming generation can learn this dance form an keep it alive for upcoming centuries and the rest of the world can know that a dance form like this exist and how it is performed.
