National Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Overview

One of the central government’s top scholarship schemes is the National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS). Under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now known as the Ministry of Education), the Department of Literacy & Education imposed NMMS scholarships to provide financial assistance to deserving students in the economically weaker group.

The NMMS application helps disadvantaged students to continue their secondary education by providing approximately Rs 12,000 per year. In November, the NMMS scholarships are distributed, and more than one lakh student seeks to benefit from it.

The Ministry of Education, under the Central Government of India, distributes over 1,00,000 NMMS scholarships each year.

 

NMMS goals

In May 2008, NMMS scholarships were launched. The key aim of NMMS is to inspire brilliant students to continue their secondary education and reduce the dropout rate.

A significant number of students leave their studies after completing their 8th grade. Every year the central government issues 1 lakh NMMS scholarships to promote education in India.

 

Criteria for Qualifying

  • The scholarships are required to be used by students whose parental income from all sources is not more than Rs. 1,50,000/-. As per state government requirements, reservations exist.
  • Students must have a minimum of 55 percent or equivalent grade marks in the Class VII review for appearance in the scholarship award selection test (SC/ST Relaxable by 5 percent).
  • Students can study in parliament, local bodies, and government-aided schools as regular students. Students studying at “KendriyaVidalayas and “Jawahar VavodayaVidlayas” are not entitled to receive a scholarship.” Similarly, students studying in residential schools run by state government institutions, where facilities such as boarding, accommodation, and education are offered. Students studying in private schools are also not eligible under this scheme for a scholarship.
  • The applicant must have scored at least 55 percent marks or equivalent grades in the Class VIII exam at the time of selection for the scholarship award. For SC/ST, there will be 5 percent relaxation.
  • A scholarship in the secondary and higher secondary stages or equivalent classes IX to XII is payable only for India’s studies for a maximum duration of four years.

 

NMMS Scholarships Application Process

A student must ensure that he/she meets all the eligibility requirements defined by the Ministry of Education to apply for an NMMS scholarship.

After ensuring that students can apply for an NMMS scholarship online by following the steps listed below. You will find a step-by-step guide below to apply for the NMMS form with full ease.

First, by completing all the necessary information on the national scholarship or NMMS portal, students must register themselves as a new student (NSP).

Students applying for NMMS are advised to keep a copy of all the relevant documents required during the registration process.

The registration applicant must complete all required information such as school enrollment number, educational qualification, bank details, Aadhar card number, and the state domicile in the application form.

The NMMS portal creates an NMMS login ID for the students applying for the scholarship as the registration process is over. Furthermore, the NMMS login ID of the NMMS portal’s application is used as an NMMS login ID for NMMS for future references.

 

Criteria for NMMS scholarship

The NMMS is a scholarship offered under its scheme by the central government of India. Still, the scholarship examination is carried out by all states for its candidates; the NCERT sets the NMMS Scholastic aptitude and mental capacity test guidelines.
