About National Doctor’s Day

July 1st marks the celebration of National Doctor’s Day in India. It started as a tribute to one of India’s greatest physicians of all time, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was also the second chief minister of the state of West Bengal.

He was born on the 1st of July in the year 1882, and made an immense contribution in the field of medical science and became popular as one of the most legendary physicians. He passed away on the same date of his birth, that is, the 1st of July in the year 1962, at the age of 80.

One year before his death, in 1961, he was honored with the Bharat Ratna—which is India’s highest civilian award. Thus, this day began to be observed as National Doctor’s Day in India.

The purpose of the day is to throw light on the massive contribution doctors of the country make to society and pay a tribute to them for saving lives, healing people, and treating patients.

India as a country has reached newer heights when it comes to achievements in medical science, and July 1st emphasizes on all such achievements, not just from the doctors’ end, but also from the researchers’ end, who dedicate hours and hours every day into studying about human life, striving to discover medicines to cure diseases and treat people.

The day also acknowledges the achievements of all doctors in the country who have made an impeccable contribution to medical science, beating all the hindrances that they had to face and had successfully done their job.

People on this day are also made aware through campaigns about what are the roles, importance, and responsibilities that doctors undertake, and what ethics they should follow when it comes to dealing with life and death situations, and how the quality of treatment is important when it comes to handling medical cases.
