About Narmada River
Also known by the name of Rewa, Narmada River is the fifth-longest river in the entire Indian subcontinent and also the fourth-longest river in the series of rivers flowing completely in the Indian country; the other three being the Ganga, the Godavari, and the Krishna.
In terms of its geographical contributions, it is commonly regarded as the lifeline for the state of Madhya Pradesh, simply due to the fact that it has contributed to the state in multiple ways when it comes to its prosperity and development.
When it comes to religious significance, the river has multidimensional grounds to be widely acknowledged as a popular Hindu pilgrim trail.
In Hinduism, River Narmada is popularly regarded as one of the seven holy rivers; the other six being the Ganges, the Yamuna, the Godavari, the Saraswati, the Sindhu, and lastly, the Kaveri.
The Hindu culture abides by the popular belief that a true devotee can take a holy dip in any of these seven rivers in order to wipe off his sins and start a new life afresh, surrendering the almighty. It is also believed as per legend, that the origin of River Narmada is way older than the origin and existence of the Ganges.
River Narmada has found multiple references since ancient eras, in the epics Ramayana, the Mahabharat, as well as the Puranas. According to the Hindu mythology, there are a lot of stories associated with the true origins of the river. Out of these, two of the most widely mentioned are:
- When Lord Shiva was focused rigorously on his meditation, he began perspiring. Such was the intensity and magnitude of his perspiration that his sweat began getting accumulated altogether and commenced to flow as a river, giving birth to River Narmada.
- The other theory talks about the two teardrops that fell from the eyes of the creator of the universe, Lord Brahma, and gave birth to two rivers—the Narmada and the Son.
Due to the sanctity and religious associations of the river, every shrine and structure situated on its banks or near are regarded as popular religious places in the country.
