Causes of Lung cancer
- Lung Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. It causes many reasons such as a number of cigarettes smoked and the time over which smoking has occurred; doctors refer to this risk in terms of pack-years of smoking history.
- Passive smoking or the inhalation of tobacco smoke by non-smokers who share living or working quarters with smokers etc.
- The presence of certain diseases of the lung, notably chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is associated with an increased risk of Lung Cancer.

Small cell lung cancers (SCLC):
SCLC accounts for about 20% of all lung cancers. Although the cells are small, they multiply quickly and form large tumors that can spread throughout the body.
Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC):
NSCLC accounts for about 80% of lung cancers. There are different types of NSCLC such as Squamous cell carcinoma (also called epidermoid carcinoma), Adenocarcinoma, Bronchioalveolar carcinoma, and Large-cell undifferentiated carcinoma, etc.
Symptoms of Lung Cancer
- A new cough in a smoker or a past smoker should raise concern for lung cancer.
- Chest pain is a symptom in about one-fourth of people with lung cancer. This chest pain may be is dull, aching, and persistent and may involve other structures surrounding the lung.
- Shortness of breath usually results from a blockage in part of the lung, collection of fluid around the lung or the spread of the tumor through the lungs.
- Wheezing or Hoarseness may signal blockage or inflammation in the lungs that may go along with cancer.
