About Lansdowne

Located in the Pauri Garhwal district of the northern state of Uttarakhand in India, Lansdowne is primarily a cantonment and quite a popular hill station in the country.

It stands at an elevation of 1,700 meters above the sea level and the official language of this region is Hindi. According to the 2001 census of India, the total population of this place is over 7,902 people.

Formerly, Lansdowne was known by the name of Kaludanda. Its present name was coined after Lord Lansdowne, who was the then viceroy of British India and founded this place.

The region is surrounded by dense oak and blue pine forests, and Lansdowne is one of those hill stations in India, which is relatively quieter than the others, yet quite easily accessible and well connected with roadways. During the British rule, the place was used as a hub for training of Garhwal Rifles.

Although the place has developed and grown as a tourist spot over the years, it is the British people who introduced Lansdowne to urban developments, and one can find this evident through the buildings and churches built here by the British.

Lansdowne makes a perfect spot for minds seeking meditation and introspection as it has a soothing and serene ambiance.

It is also an apt spot for adventure-seeking souls and nature lovers as they can participate in a list of adventure sports activities here, such as trekking, paddling, boating, bird-watching, etc.

The area also gets snowfalls during the winter, which is quite a rare sight in a warm country like India. The major tourist attraction spots in Lansdowne are as follows:
