Born on the 28th of January, in the year 1865, in the Indian state of Punjab, Lala Lajpat Rai was an eminent revolutionary whose leadership during India’s Independence Movement was widely recognized by the nation.
An author by profession, he had pursued his academics studying law, and also practiced the profession for a brief period before joining the Indian National Congress party, and thus, entering the world of politics. Throughout his life, he has been a supporter of Hinduism as a religion and had irrevocable belief that the religion was the righteous way to drive humanity to peace and liberalism. This ideology garnered a lot of criticism for him, as his beliefs were thought to be “non secular” contradicting the ideologies of “secularism” that the Congress endorsed.
He was also one of the triumvirates of the “Lal Bal Pal” team, which focused at promoting Swaraj and boycotting European goods. He became popular in history by the title of “Sher-E-Punjab,” which means “The Lion of Punjab,” when translated into English.
His involvement in nationalistic movements was tremendous, some of which also led him to suffer gravely. One such instance was when he suffered from a lot of injuries when he led a peaceful, non violent protest against the Simon Commission, and got beaten up by the police. He passed away on the 17th of November, in the year 1928.
