About Kusinara
Commonly and most widely known by the name of Kushinagar, Kusinara is one of the most popular Buddhist pilgrim spots in the country, prominent for the fact that it was this place for Lord Buddha breathed his last.
Situated at a distance of around 53 KM from Gorakhpur, in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Kushinagar at one point of time used to be Malla Kingdom’s most celebrated center. In fact, such were its popularity that a list of stupas as well as viharas was built in this place in a period between 230 BC and 413 AD, an era when Kushinagar was at a peak of flourishing and prosperity.
The lord had passed away near the Hiranyavati River in Kushinagar and was later cremated at the Ramabhar stupa. Archeologists, as well as historians, have over the years found a wide variety of ancient artifacts that showcase rich Buddhist architecture and culture, and this has magnified the attention of devotees from the religion from all over the world to this place.
The major tourist spots in Kushinagar include the Mahaparinirvana Temple, the Nirvana stupa and temple, the Wat Thai temple, the Japanese Temple, and at last but not the least, the Ramabhar stupa—where Gautam Buddha was cremated.
