About Prayer Flags

The origination of the concept of prayer flags dates back to times of Indian mythology, where it was believed gods fought against the demons to bring peace on earth. The roots of the prayer flags are credited to the Buddhists who would write Buddhist sutras (messages) on flags and banners and those would be used as a means to demonstrate their urge for peace.

In India, the concept involves the printing of these prayer flags on clothing and conveys a commitment to nonviolence and hope for peace.

This concept was carried out by India to the country of Tibet at a time as early as the 800 CE, when real flags were included with alterations and modifications. Popular Indian monk Atisha, whose span lasted from the 980 CE until 1054 CE, introduced the concept of prayer flags to be printed on clothes to the Tibetan people.
