About Indian National Maritime Day
On the 5th of April every year, the country of India celebrates Indian National Maritime Day. The occasion was first celebrated on the 5th of April in the year 1964.
The history of this day dates back to the year 1919, a crucial year for navigation history, when the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited: The SS Loyalty, made its first journey to the United Kingdom, making a big mark for India’s shipping business.
India as a country is located on a vast sea expanse, connecting it to most of the prominent spots in the world via sea route and hence, the Indian subcontinent has always had a strong foothold when it comes to seafaring, and the history of it dates back to as early as 3000 BC during the Indus Valley civilization.
Ever since then the seafaring industry in India has only risen, with more and more individuals from every generation showing a keen interest in maritime activities, and thus, it all started with sailing ships with wooden hulls to the ones all loaded with modern technologies as on today.
The credit for Indian shipping industry to commence goes to the Europeans as it was under their reign that India began being a part of doing world trade via sea routes, however, post the country’s independence in 1947, there was no looking back for the sea trade and commerce industry of India as it began growing exponentially, and in fact, the Indian Navy, responsible for protection of all sea and shore related activities including trade and commerce, has only gone on to become stronger and more potent, having expanded rapidly.
As on today, India is a part of the 158 countries who are registered with the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization, which is based in London, U.K. India became a part of the member’s list of this organization long ago in the year 1959.
