Built in the year 2008, the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong was the seventh among the other chain of IIMs to be built in the country since the year 1961. It is also popularly known as the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management or the IIM-S.

Located in Shillong in the north eastern Indian state of Meghalaya, the city was chosen as the first north eastern city to have an elite institute set up, as the government of the north eastern states thought that the region lacked places of quality higher education. After a lot of debates and considerations as to which city should be the one to have an IIM, it was Shillong that was selected.

The first academic session of the institute commenced on the 4th of July in the year 2008, and by the year 2012, the IIM-S was declared to be a part of leading business schools in the country, as the Business World published a report giving the IIM-S the 8th rank in the list of best business schools in India.

Admission to the institute is strictly based on merit scores in the Common Admission Test (CAT) and there are no reservations as such for the candidates hailing from the north eastern states or the state of Meghalaya per se.
