Going on platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and other employer-employee relationship websites showed the majority of employers prefer hiring employees that finished from top colleges. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook hires more than 80 percent of its employees from a top college. Deloitte, Apple, and even IBM have been said to have hired more than 10,000 employees from top colleges.

Google publicly said where you graduated from has little say in where you end your career and has hired over 80 percent of their employees from top colleges. This is evident that most employers have an affinity for top colleges because they believe only the best talents attend such prestigious colleges.

Reasons You Might Be Looking For Talent In The Wrong Place

A new report on the skill gap, however, showed that the majority of employers are looking for talents in all the wrong places since the majority are focused on top college graduates. Based on the common skills employers look for in employees, some analysts group (correlation one) developed a standardized assessment for roles ranging from data scientist to the least common role in the business sector.

The assessment results showed that there are more talents from low-tier colleges than from top-tier colleges. Based on percentage, 75% of students that graduated from a low-tier college have more to offer than their counterparts from top colleges.

It is no surprise that many employers settle for the remaining 25 percent of students from top colleges; while this may seem fine, it affects employers in many ways.

The first is that they pay more than they should have; top talent is scarce to come by, and when you eventually find one, you will give it all you have to keep off competitors. Top college graduates usually have multiple job offers to wait for them upon graduation, so employers spend a lot convincing them to come work for their company.

The second way employers are hurting themselves is that most consumers end up complaining about the products of top colleges because they are the best at following instructions, unlike low-tier college graduates that are independent and will thrive under pressure.

Book smart doesn’t equate skills; having straight As in school doesn’t mean the employees automatically have the required skill for the job. To save you stress, trim down the job criteria and list the skills you are searching for.

Skills and other job requirements can be taught whether by registering for an online class or learned on the job, but the company’s culture can’t be taught so easily. So, when next you’re looking to hire new talents, trim them down to candidates that are a culture fit for your company.

To achieve this, include your mission and vision statement in your job adverts and, during the interview, ask questions about the candidate’s values, long-term goals, and approach to work. Cultural fit shouldn’t be mistaken for uniformity alone; it includes new perspectives the candidate will be bringing to the business.
