Hazratbal Dargah in Srinagar
About Hazratbal Dargah
The name quite literally means a “majestic lace.” The Hazratbal Dargah is a famous Sufi shrine located in Hazratbal in Srinagar, in the state of Jammu & Kashmir in India.
The place has many historic ties and has a great significance in the religion of Islam, especially due to the fact that many Muslims in Kashmir believe the relic in the Dargah to be a hair of the founder of Islam—Prophet Muhammad.
In Kashmir, this dargah is considered to be the holiest shrine in Islam and it is surrounded by natural scenic beauty since it is situated on the left banks of the beautiful Dal Lake.
Interestingly, the relic in the dargah has been a subject of keen interest for masses ever since it went missing in the year 1963, which led to a number of protests and people growing panicky. In fact, a new committee called the Awami Action Committee was formed with the sole aim of recovering the relic.
The same year the then prime minister of independent India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had made a live broadcast in the country talking about the mysterious disappearance of the extremely sacred relic.
The relic was however recovered a year later in 1964 on the 4th of January.
