About Gulzarilal Nanda

Born in Punjab, on July 4th, in the year 1898, Gulzarilal Nanda was a renowned economist and prime minister if the country, who was mainly known for taking over the office as the prime minister of India, for two times, both for a short while; first after the death of the first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and second, after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Despite his popularity among the masses as a politician from the Indian National Congress Party, the party, which was the ruling one during that time, didn’t elect him as a candidate for the post of prime minister and chose another, during both the times.

Nanda served as the prime minister of India both the times for a brief period of 13 days, and despite being a popular politician, he was always known for leading the life of a simple common man, away from the luxuries.

A religious follower of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles and philosophies towards life and people, he was a member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly and was a vital figure contributing towards the progress and development of the city of Bombay, as well as its government.

He breathed his last on January 15, 1998, at the age of 99.
