About Gangotri
Located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, Gangotri is one of India’s most popular Hindu pilgrim towns, situated right on the banks of River Bhagirathi and the origin point of the holy Ganges River.
Set up amidst scenic beauty, Gangotri is surrounded by nature as it sits right on the Himalayan range at a height of 3,100 meters.
From the snow-clad mountains enveloping the town to the whole pious and serene ambiance make it a special place of keen interest for pilgrims from all over the world who come here to pay their tributes to the goddess and also embrace the sanctity of the place.
According to legend, it is believed in Hindu culture that Goddess Ganga had taken a form of a river in order to condone and absolve all the sins that were committed by the predecessors of King Bhagiratha after the latter managed to prove his redemption with his severe penance.
Gangotri happens to be one of the four pivotal pilgrim spots in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. The other three are Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Yamunotri.
The prominent Gangotri Temple here was built in the 18th century by a Gorkha commander. The temple is always bustling with visitors and priests perform rituals on a daily basis to pay homage to Goddess Ganga.
