Electric Cars: A Revolution in Personal Transport

What are some of the disadvantages of electric vehicles?
Rare metals are required for their batteries.
Lithium, the lightest metal and solid element under normal circumstances, is used extensively in the batteries for electric vehicles. Chile produces the most lithium (8,800 tonnes per year), followed by Argentina and China, with Bolivia having the world’s biggest known deposits. Copper, cobalt, aluminium, nickel, and sometimes manganese are also utilized in electric vehicles, as is conductive nonmetal graphite.
The production of electric vehicles increases pollution
To gain a true picture of how much greenhouse gas is released during the production of an electric vehicle, consider how its components are sourced and manufactured.
The basic materials for the automobile must be mined, and the mining process emits a lot of greenhouse gases. The raw materials must then be processed before they can be utilized, which releases even more greenhouse gases.

They are only as green as their power sources
The environmental effect of an electric automobile can vary greatly depending on how the power that charges its battery is generated.
A coal-fired power plant releases 800-850 grams of CO2 per kWh (latest estimates show this may be as low as 650g per kWh), whereas a cleaner, gas-fired power plant emits 350-400g of CO2 per kWh.
When using renewable energy, such as solar panels or wind turbines, about 36g of CO2 is emitted per kWh, after accounting for emissions made during the production process.
Electric cars can be expensive to buy
Electric automobiles are more expensive to buy than gasoline or diesel-powered versions of the same vehicle. However, this is the extent of the expense increases.
A 30-minute quick charge from a dedicated charging point at a service station costs roughly £6 – not much more than a gallon of diesel or gasoline, and in certain circumstances, it’s even free. Because there are few moving components and no filters or oil to change, servicing electric vehicles is typically less expensive.
You can’t drive as far in an electric car
The greatest electric vehicles currently offer ranges of up to 300 miles between charges. However, many have a range of about 100 miles or fewer between charges, making them ideal for use in cities and on short, local travels rather than long-distance travel.
And they require at least half an hour of charging at a specialized, high voltage charging port, such as those found at highway rest stops, in order to be recharged.
There aren’t enough charging points
There are currently charging outlets in 12,276 places in the UK, with 460 more to be added in August 2020. The number of plugs is expected to reach 80,000 by 2025.
This compares well with the 8,746 petrol stations now operational in the United Kingdom. However, as previously said, fueling an automobile with diesel or gasoline only takes a few minutes, not 30 minutes or more.
The main focus of the best li-ion battery design courses is on batteries – namely, lithium-ion batteries, battery design, and development in electric vehicles as the key market.
