About Attukal Bhagavathy Temple

Located in the city of Thiruvananthapuram in god’s own country, Kerala, Attukal is a famous Hindu pilgrimage place. It is mainly famous for the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, that happens to be one of the oldest and most popular temples located in south India, and thousands of devotees, especially women take keen interest in visiting this temple, paying tributes to the goddess of this temple, who is regarded as the kind and supreme mother of every living being.

The goddess is commonly referred to as Attukalamma—and every devotee from all over the country to make it a point to pay their regards to the supreme goddess whenever they visit the Attukal center.

According to legend and mythology, it is believed that Kannaki—who is regarded as a reincarnation of goddess Parvati, took refuge in Attukal after she left the ancient city of Madurai following its destruction, and it was Kannaki who was Attukal Bhagavathy—the supreme goddess for whom the famous temple was built.

Many festivities take place in the temple, the most popular of which is the Pongala Mahotsavam, it is so widely celebrated that the occasion has made its mark on the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest congregation of women in the whole world altogether.
