About Ambedkar Jayanti

The date of 14th April marks the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, also popularly known as Baba Saheb Ambedkar. Born in the year 1891, Dr.Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was a multidimensional personality who throughout his life successfully played the roles of an economist, a jurist, a social reformer as well as a politician.

It was him who brought radical changes in the society, when it came to the unprivileged classes, and voiced against all types of social discriminations, be it the concept of “untouchables” or gender bias or unequal labour laws.

The pivotal architect of the Constitution of India, he made a record for himself by becoming the first law minister after India attained independence. During his tenure, which lasted from the year India gained independence, that is 1947 till 1951, it was Jawaharlal Nehru who served as the prime minister of India.

After his tenure was over, Dr. Ambedkar was succeeded by Charu Chandra Biswas as the Minister of Law and Justice of independent India.

A prodigy since childhood, Ambedkar pursued his academic career from a number of famous institutions, such as the Columbia University as well as the London School of Economics. His career started as a lawyer, and he would also deliver lectures at various institutes as a professor of economics and political science.

He was a significant figure in the Indian Buddhist Movement, and he converted to Buddhism in the year 1956. He brought a lot of scope for the Dalits and the socially backward classes to have a say in society.

He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna Award posthumously in the year 1990, after his death in the year 1956, at the age of 65.

As of today, even after his death, his legacy continues to grow strong among the masses through his memorials as well as various depictions in popular culture.
