Thirayattam Dance

Thirayattam is a ritual performing Ethnic art form South Malabar region in Kerala state, India. Is an ethnic art form manifested to please the deities and rapid in movements? The word “Thirayattam” refers to a ‘colorful dance’. It is an admixture of dance, drama, songs, instrumental music, facial and bodily makeup, martial art and rituals, composed in a harmonizing manner.

Thirayattam is different from another dance form because of its unique artistic steps and costumes, customs and traditions.

Thirayattam is usually performed in courtyards of kaavukal also called sacred groves and in village shrines in the south Malabar region in Kozhikode & Malappuram district of Kerala. Traditionally, the “Perumannan” community has given rights to perform this magnificent dance form in their courtyards or kaavukal or sacred Groves.

Thirayattam and it’s magic

Thirayattam shows certain similarities to ‘Mudiyettu’ of central Kerala, ‘Padayani’ of Travancore, and Kola of “Thulunad”. It is a Dravidian cult expressed through the culture and customs. This dance form follows the concept of  Hill-god worship and Tree-worship, etc are practiced in these courtyards or sacred grooves and ate also reflected in this dance form that survived through generations of caste hierarchy and priesthood with an expressive tradition for the oppressed class along with igniting a sense of identity and their expression of collective self. It is performed only by men.

Valletta” is performed in daylight and “Thirayattam” is in the light of “choottu” at night Vellattu represents the teenage of the deity Thira, Chanthu Thira, youthhood and old age respectively.
