About Nishi Language

Nishi Language

Belonging to the Tani branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family, Nishi is known by a list of other names, these are: Nyishi, Nisi, Nishing, Nissi, Nyising, Bangni, Dafla, Daphla, and Lel. It is mainly spoken by the people from the Nishi community.

In India, it is spoken in parts of the north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh as well as Assam. Coming to the geographical distribution of the language, it is spoken in the districts of East Kameng and Lower Subansiri in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and in the district of Darrang in the state of Assam.

According to the 2001 census of India, there are more than approximately 2,20,000 native speakers of the Nishi language.

Coming to the dialects of the language, there are three major dialects of Nishi used by the people. These are Aka Lel, Nishang, as well as Bangni.

Nishi is a tonal language and its grammar includes concentration on the differences between numbers, cases as well as persons. The language doesn’t pay attention to differences between the genders. Even the counting system in Nishi differs between nonhuman and human objects.
