Built in the 1570s, the Jama Masjid is a mosque, located in Fatehpur Sikri, in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Built by renowned saint Salim Chishti, it is one of the most religious and popular places of religious interests, to be run by royal imams in the country. The current royal imam who leads the prayers in the mosque is Maulvi Mukarram Ahmad, son of late royal imam Hazrat Shah Muhammad Mazhar Ullah.
The mosque comprises of a single dome, accompanied with two halls on both the sides and two square-shaped chambers that the domes crown.
This structure in Indian history is the perfect illustration of the period transition of Islamic architecture, wherein Persian elements were mixed with the indigenous materials to have a beautiful output.
The mosque also has three arch shaped openings with panels decked with breathtaking mosaics made of stones and tiles on a blue backdrop, giving it a complete royal look. There are also a variety of watercolor paintings on the inside of the mosque that can most definitely be an artist’s paradise, with its magnificent floral art and designs.
Other famous monuments in the country like the Buland Darwaza and the Tomb of Salim Chishti are also located within the premises of the Agra Jama Masjid.
