Known also by the name of Lohagarh Fort, which means the fort of Iron, the Bharatpur Fort was constructed by Jat rulers of Bharatpur, in an act of defense against the British attacks in the Indian state of Rajasthan.
Standing true to its name, the fort gained immense popularity as it managed to stand firm and strong despite all the harsh attacks by the British, while other forts couldn’t manage to endure those attacks and fell down. This gave the city of Bharatpur complete security, turning the theory behind the name of the fort into a living reality, i.e. impregnable.
The foundation stone of the construction of the fort was laid in 1732 by Maharaja Suraj Mal. The completion, however, happened only 60 years later. The unique aspect of this structure is the thick, mud walls which endured many of the attacks by the British and the Mughals.
The cannon balls thrown at the structure during attacks by the British and the Mughals were absorbed by the mud walls, which are around 7 kms in length, and got collected to be later on fired back at the rivals.
The fundamental purpose of the fort was security and today parts of the fort are transformed into government offices and museum, available for tourism purposes.
