About Balaram Jayanti

In Hindu mythology, Lord Balaram was the older brother of popular Hindu deity Lord Krishna, and thus, Balaram Jayanti is celebrated in different parts of India to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Balaram.

In some parts of India, it is observed on the day of Akshay Tritiya, while in other parts of the country, it is celebrated on the day of Shravan Poornima.

On the other hand, some regions in India choose to celebrate it in the month of Baisakh, which as per the English calendar falls either in the month of April or May.

In northern India, Balaram Jayanti is commonly known as Lalahi Chhath or Hal Shashti. While in the state of Gujarat, in Braj region to be precise, the festival is celebrated by the name of Randhan Chhath or Baladeva Chhath.

It is mainly the followers of Lord Vishnu, the Vaishnavas who celebrate this festival with immense joy and enthusiasm.

According to Hindu mythology, it is also believed by devotees that Lord Balaram happens to be the incarnation of the snake that Lord Krishna used to sleep on.

Devotees pray wholeheartedly on this day and offer their tribute to Lord Balaram as well as Lord Krishna, in order to gain a healthy life and physical strength.

The puja observed on this day takes place the usual way, wherein devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, observe a fast till afternoon without eating anything at all.

Temples in the house, as well as outside, especially those with an idol of Lord Krishna, are decorated beautifully with flowers and lamps. Idols of Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram are given holy baths by the saints as well as devotees.

Bhog is prepared by them to offer to the gods and once devotees break their fast, they have this bhog alongside other Prasad items including fruits.

Many cultural programmes take place, such as bhajans, satsangs, and some devotional dances, to celebrate this day in full spirits.
