About Ao Language
Ao Language
Ao is basically a language branch belonging to the family of Sino-Tibetan languages. It is mainly spoken by the community of Ao people residing in the north-central part of the north-eastern state of Nagaland in India.
The Ao people are most commonly known as the Naga Tribes in India with a population of over 2,40,000 people.
The Ao language family is often referred to as “Naga,” although it is not really completely related to the other set of Naga languages in the country.
The Ao branch is pretty much of an individual branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family, with negligible ties with other languages of the region. The six known languages of the Ao branch are as follows:
Chungli Ao, Mongsen Ao, Sangtam, Yimchugru, and Lotha. Other than these, the most commonly used dialects in Ao languages are Yacham and Tengsa.
Although referred to as dialects, many argue that Yacham and Tengsa are or will be treated as separate languages from the lot.
